Darcie Lott became a lover of children’s books while teaching preschool when her children were young. It became a dream of hers to write a book of her own. Her inspiration for this story came from her love of the ocean and her passion for scuba diving where she gets up close and personal with all the creatures of the sea. She hopes her story is a heartfelt reminder that a single act of compassion can change someone’s life forever. Darcie also hopes to raise awareness about ocean pollution and how, working together, we can all make a difference.

Taffy and the Not So Fantastic Plastic: A Tale of Kindness and Protecting Our Creatures of the Sea
Taffy and the Not So Fantastic Plastic is an entertaining and touching story about two seagulls, a crab and a sea lion all working together to solve one incredibly challenging task. Follow along as these unusual new friends show the readers that kindness, determination, and a little work can make an enormous difference. Be sure to read the “Fun Facts” to learn a little bit about the ocean animals in the story, the “Not so Fun Facts” to learn how plastic pollution is affecting these creatures of the sea and what we can do to help. Be on the lookout for a curious starfish who pops up throughout the story. Are you ready to do your part to keep that Not So Fantastic Plastic out of our ocean? Taffy and Friends thank you!
What one thing can you do today to help?
Remember that our land and sea are connected, so we must dispose of trash properly no matter where we are.
We can reduce, reuse, and recycle to keep trash out of the ocean in the first place.
We can bring our own shopping bags, drink out of reusable bottles, and participate in things like shoreline cleanup.

The Threat & Our Role
More than 250 million tons of plastic are estimated to make its way into our ocean by 2025. The environmental damage caused by plastic debris alone is estimated at US$13 billion a year. Divers are often the first to witness human impact on the marine environment and are uniquely positioned to help report, remove and advocate to stop marine debris at its source.
